Kenya Green Card Lottery 2026: How 3,760 Kenyans Won — and How You Can Too

This guide is for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. Consult a licensed immigration attorney for advice specific to your situation.

Kenya is one of the most successful African countries in the US Diversity Visa Lottery — also known as the green card lottery. In DV-2024, 3,760 Kenyan nationals were selected for the lottery, making Kenya one of the top African winners. Unlike Nigeria and Ghana (which is periodically excluded), Kenya has remained consistently DV-eligible, making this a viable and real green card pathway for Kenyans who understand how to navigate it properly.

What Is the Diversity Visa Lottery?

The Diversity Visa (DV) Lottery is a US government program that issues approximately 55,000 immigrant visas each year to nationals of countries with historically low immigration rates to the United States. Kenya has consistently qualified. The entry window opens each October and closes in November — exact dates are published by the State Department each year.

Winning the lottery does not guarantee a green card. It selects you for the opportunity to apply — you must then complete the full visa application process successfully before your visa number becomes current.

Who Is Eligible (Kenyan-Specific Requirements)

  • Nationality: You must be a Kenyan national — born in Kenya or born to a Kenyan-born parent. (Note: if you were born in a DV-ineligible country but have Kenyan parents, you may be able to claim Kenyan chargeability.)
  • Education: You must have at least a secondary school certificate equivalent to a US high school diploma (KCSE completion), OR two years of work experience in a qualifying occupation within the past five years.
  • No disqualifying criminal history: Standard US visa inadmissibility grounds apply.

Step-by-Step: From Entry to Green Card

  1. Step 1 — Enter the lottery (October–November each year): Submit the Electronic Diversity Visa Entry (E-DV) at dvlottery.state.gov. There is no fee to enter. Submit only one entry per person — duplicate entries result in disqualification. Use a current photo meeting the strict State Department specifications.
  2. Step 2 — Check your results (May following year): Results are posted at dvlottery.state.gov. Do not trust any third-party website claiming to offer lottery results — the official site is the only valid source.
  3. Step 3 — File DS-260 immigrant visa application: If selected, you receive instructions to complete and submit the DS-260 online immigrant visa application through the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC). Submit this as soon as possible — the lottery is oversubscribed and not all selected applicants receive visas before the fiscal year ends.
  4. Step 4 — Gather documents: Birth certificate, KCSE certificate or other qualifying education documents, passport, police clearance from Kenya (and any other country where you have lived for 6+ months), and civil documents (marriage certificate if applicable).
  5. Step 5 — Medical examination: Schedule a medical exam with a USCIS-approved physician in Nairobi. The US Embassy in Kenya maintains a list of approved Panel Physicians.
  6. Step 6 — Visa interview at US Embassy Nairobi: Your interview is at the US Embassy in Gigiri, Nairobi. Bring original documents (not copies) for everything. The interviewing officer will ask about your background, qualifications, and plans in the US.
  7. Step 7 — Travel and activate your visa: After approval, you must travel to the US before your visa expires. Upon entry, you receive a stamp — your green card will be mailed to you within a few weeks.

Common Mistakes Kenyan Lottery Winners Make

  • Submitting a DS-260 with inconsistent information versus the original lottery entry — this raises red flags and can lead to denial
  • Waiting too long to file DS-260 after selection — DV visa numbers expire at the end of the US fiscal year (September 30); if your number is not current before then, you lose your slot
  • Using a "visa agent" who submits the lottery entry on your behalf and charges fees — these are often fraudulent, as the lottery is free to enter
  • Failing to bring original documents (not photocopies) to the Nairobi embassy interview
  • Not including your spouse and children in the original application — they must be included from the start to accompany you as derivatives

Find an Immigration Lawyer for Kenyan DV Cases

After winning the DV Lottery, having an immigration attorney review your DS-260, documents, and prepare you for the Nairobi embassy interview can be the difference between approval and denial. Mistakes at this stage are not recoverable.
