Ghana to UK: NHS Health and Care Worker Visa Guide for Ghanaian Nurses and Doctors (2026)

This guide is for informational purposes only and does not constitute legal advice. Consult a licensed UK immigration solicitor for advice specific to your situation.

Ghana is one of the top source countries for NHS healthcare workers in the United Kingdom. Thousands of Ghanaian nurses, doctors, pharmacists, and allied health professionals have built careers in the UK through the Health and Care Worker Visa — a dedicated fast-track route that offers lower fees, no Immigration Health Surcharge, and a direct path to settlement. If you are a Ghanaian healthcare professional considering the UK, this guide covers everything from NMC registration to ILR.

What Changed in 2024–2025 and What It Means for You

In July 2024, the UK government closed the Health and Care Worker visa for care workers and senior care workers — roles in adult social care at non-clinical levels. This significantly reduced the volume of health and care visa applications. However, clinical roles remain fully open: registered nurses, doctors, pharmacists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other regulated health professions can still apply.

For Ghanaian applicants, this means the route is less crowded than it was in 2022-2023 — shorter processing times and more sponsor capacity at NHS trusts.

Who Qualifies: Eligible Roles for Ghanaian Healthcare Professionals

  • Registered Nurses (Adult, Mental Health, Learning Disability, Children's)
  • Doctors (all specialties) — including Foundation Year equivalent roles
  • Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians
  • Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists
  • Radiographers, Sonographers, Medical Laboratory Scientists
  • Midwives
  • Allied health professions listed in the Shortage Occupation List

Step 1: NMC Registration for Ghanaian Nurses

For nurses, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration is the critical first step — you cannot be sponsored without it. The NMC process for Ghanaian nurses involves:

  1. Apply to NMC with your Ghana Nursing and Midwifery Council credentials. The NMC will verify your qualifications with the Ghana NMC directly.
  2. English language test: IELTS Academic with a minimum of 7.0 in each band, or OET Grade B in all components. Many Ghanaian nurses are native English speakers but still need to demonstrate this formally.
  3. Computer-Based Test (CBT): A multiple-choice nursing knowledge test taken in Ghana (Prometric centres in Accra).
  4. Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE): A clinical skills assessment taken at an NMC-approved test centre in the UK. This is done after you arrive in the UK — your employer will arrange it.
  5. You receive a conditional NMC registration after the CBT, which is enough to get your visa and start work. Full registration comes after passing OSCE.

Step 2: Finding a UK Sponsor

You must have a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) from a UK employer with a valid Sponsor Licence to apply. For nurses and doctors, the primary sponsors are:

  • NHS Trusts: Many NHS trusts actively recruit from Ghana. NHS Jobs (jobs.nhs.uk) lists international recruitment campaigns. Some trusts recruit directly in Accra through job fairs.
  • Private hospitals: Bupa, Spire, Nuffield Health, and HCA Healthcare all hold Sponsor Licences.
  • Recruitment agencies: Several UK agencies specialise in international nurse recruitment — they source the CoS from an NHS trust on your behalf. Be cautious of agencies charging excessive fees; UKVI regulations limit what can be charged to applicants.

Visa Application and Costs

Once you have a CoS, you apply online for the Health and Care Worker visa from Ghana. Key details:

  • Visa fee: £284 (significantly lower than the standard Skilled Worker fee)
  • No Immigration Health Surcharge — a major saving (the standard surcharge is £1,035/year)
  • Processing time: 3 weeks from Ghana for most applications
  • Salary requirement: Must meet the going rate for your role (NHS Agenda for Change bands 5-8 for nurses; doctor salaries vary by grade)

Path to Settlement (ILR) and Citizenship

After 5 years on a Health and Care Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain — permanent settlement with no time restriction. After ILR, you can apply for British citizenship after a further 12 months. Ghana allows dual citizenship, so you do not need to give up your Ghanaian passport.

Find a UK Immigration Lawyer for Ghanaian Healthcare Professionals

NMC registration errors and CoS complications are the most common reasons Ghanaian healthcare visa applications are delayed. An experienced immigration solicitor can review your documents before submission and avoid costly mistakes.
